to•tem

The written word can be a venerated object, adored with a passion. A link or binding idea for groups of people, both within and across cultural and social distinctions. Is the material form of the written word destined to change, and the book become an object of archival or mythical form only?  A totem.

to•tem n.

b. A representation of such an object.

c. A social group having a common affiliation with such an object.

2. A venerated emblem or symbol.
